ScMI Summer School 2010: The future of sustainable economy
During the first ScMI Summer School students and company representatives developed scenarios for the future of sustainable economy and their relevance for graduates and companies. The idea of sustainability does not focus on the environment, it includes economical and social aspects as well and tends to an equalised handling of all aspects. To deliver a more sustainable economy it is necessary to do more with less - by making better use of resources, increase investment, promote stability and competition, develop skills and reward work. Therefore sustainable development requires a long term view of the economy, rather than adopting short term fixes.

The public interest on sustainable economies is increasing, while the realisation of sustainability often fails because of stakeholders economical interests.

On this account ScMI and the student initiative oikos (students for sustainable economics and management) organised the first Summer School under the topic “Graduates from today and the future of sustainable economy”. During this three day event 20 students and several company representatives worked out scenarios for the future of the sustainable economy. The main results were seven scenarios which show development opportunities until the year 2020. Five of the seven scenarios describe an important role of sustainability.

The amount of scenarios shows that there is not only one possible future. The scenarios describe seven different and realistic pictures of the future. As nobody knows which scenario is most likely, we have to take all of them into account. Accordingly the students and company representatives discussed the challenges of all the different scenarios.
