Health Data Scenarios - How data will shape the healthcare system of the future

What might the health data-driven ecosystem of the future look like? What would be the role of today's providers, citizens and patients - and what room would it offer for innovation and new players? These are the questions that the "DayOne" initiative, supported by the Basel region, has addressed - in a scenario process together with ScMI AG and its Swiss partner Blauen Solutions.

The healthcare industry is one of the areas that will be particularly strongly changed by digitization. This applies to the opportunities as well as the risks. Data-based approaches enable new, personalized therapies and significantly improved prevention, but they also put pressure on existing healthcare systems, create more transparency - even for large tech corporations - and could ultimately lead to over-commercialization. A clear forecast cannot be made; rather, various possible developments must be thought ahead.

In a systematic online process with over 50 experts from different groups, supported by Deloitte, Novartis and the Canton of Zurich, ten scenarios were developed that describe possible futures of the "Health Data Ecosystem". Central distinguishing features of the scenarios are the degree of technological change through AI and personalized medicine as well as the culture- and process-driven change of the healthcare system. Focusing on these two core dimensions, four overarching scenario groups emerge:

Specific health-data architectures were outlined for all ten scenarios, including, for example, data ownership, openness of infrastructures, trust in health data, its standardization and monetization, and the breadth of the value chain. In addition, an initial scenario assessment was conducted, highlighting in particular the desire of various stakeholders for cultural change within the healthcare industry. All results are summarized in a study report, for which a free download is available.

However, the development of the health data scenarios does not mark the end of the DayOne scenario project. In a second project phase, the scenarios will be stress tested in stakeholder-specific workshops. The main aim here is to address specific issues in each case and to examine them in the light of specific scenarios. In addition, DayOne, ScMI and Blauen Solutions want to validate the scenario assessment in this way and derive further consequences. If you are interested in a presentation of the scenarios or in information about a possible collaboration in the project, please feel free to contact us directly.
